Dar Sabra, Marrakech

Today’s free-spirited travel zeitgeist encourages us to discover places otherwise missed, guiding those in the know to gems like Dar Sabra, a boutique resort nestled amongst palm trees in La Palmeraie. Surrounded by extraordinary sights, a sense of allure and artistry will hold you in its charm.

The resort derives its name from the local word Sabr, which means patience or perseverance. The name conveys the resort’s guiding ethos — reflected in the thoughtful shapes of its architecture and in its welcoming staff. Patience and time are welcome companions when strolling through the more than two hectares of gardens, generously spread around red cubist sandstone.

Slowly, the gardens reveal their secrets. The curves of contemporary sculptures pose in front of miscellaneous frescoes, while ancient African treasures enrich the interior. Every object is curated by founder François Chapoutot, who decided to leave Paris to “live in an ideal environment that combines quietude and comfort.” Over the years, he invited many artists to stay and work at Dar Sabra.

Fun and flowing, the architecture marries Moroccan heritage with contemporary Mexican influences. Although inspired by the cubist movement, the tabia-tinted walls are painted according to Moroccan tradition with hand-polished lime plaster and simple stone. At the heart of the house, the Arch of sculptor Mauro Staccioli crosses paths with a cerulean blue pool, leaving behind a pale reflection in the water. Gazing out over the still surface, in the middle of all this natural and architectural splendour, there is only one sense that resonates: a sense of Sabra.
